Background information

The maximum amount of available reports and additional information has to be used as background information.

This makes it possible to identify the most relevant VERA-2R risk indicators with the systematic structured format of the VERA-2R. This also helps the professional formulate a risk narrative, risk scenarios and risk management, and supports his or her final professional judgement of risk of violent extremism.

Administration Time

The VERA-2R requires the allocation of sufficient time to administer.

Structuring the relevant background information in the appropriate VERA-2R risk indicators and a subsequent risk analysis will take at least half a day. Extra time is needed if the subject is being interviewed, and especially if he or she wants to know the results of the risk analysis.

Extra time is needed for the necessary consensus with another trained professional. This leads to a more objective risk analysis.

In addition, the professional must write a risk report, which includes six steps to the final judgement of risk of violent extremism with recommended risk management actions.

Specific risk report formats are recommended and may be required by agencies for the cases assessed.

Complex cases may require additional time for completion of the assessment. In some cases, analysis is completed by a team which would involve administration time for several professionals.

Professional Aspects

Professionals need specific theoretical and practical expertise after following a VERA-2R training.

They keep track of their knowledge about the use of the VERA-2R and about structural professional judgment principles.

Professionals should not work alone in violent extremism risk assessment and risk management. Supervision and intervision principles with other professionals are needed and helpful.

Professionals need to follow the literature about violent extremism and terrorism and associated risk characteristics.
